Mission:
Reel Works Teen Filmmaking is centered of the conviction that every young person has a story to tell and an important contribution to make our world. We believe that filmmaking holds within it essential disciplines of literacy, communication, creative and critical thinking, storytelling and teamwork that young people need to effectively express their unique visions. In the process they gain self-esteem, master state-of-the-art technology and are transformed from passive consumers to active creators of media. We say to teens: You have a voice. Use it!

The Lab
Description: The Lab, is a free after-school program that challenges Brooklyn high school students to create short documentary films about their lives. Working one-on-one with professional filmmaker-mentors, students write, shoot and edit personal narrative videos on subjects they choose. In the process, they gain self-esteem, develop media literacy and master state-of-the-art digital filmmaking technology. Each spring and fall we select 12 diverse and talented teens from across New York City for this free 20-week filmmaking workshop. To apply you must be a high school student between 15-19 years old be able to attend classes at the Prospect Park YMCA in Park Slope, Brooklyn, each Wednesday from 4pm-6pm and Saturday’s from 10am-1pm.

The Lab Master Class
Description: The Lab Master Class is a year-long advanced workshop open to graduates of The Lab who have distinguished themselves artistically and want to continue to learn and grow as filmmakers. As in The Lab, each teen is matched with a filmmaker-mentor and a core curriculum is supplemented by professional workshops in screenwriting, documentary filmmaking, camera and lighting, sound recording, editing and scoring finished films.

Reel Impact
Description: Making a film is just a personal exercise until the filmmaker presents his or her work before a real audience. Reel Impact is a comprehensive distribution program in which teen filmmakers learn how to bring their stories to new audiences through broadcast, web-cast, film festivals and community screenings.
A student-led committee responsible for over 100 films in our film library submits films to festivals and broadcasters throughout the year. Teens curate and program the www.reelworks.org website as well as a dedicated channel on partner site, AOL True Stories. Students must also bring their films to their own high schools to share with their peers.

The Summer Lab
Description: The Summer Lab is a free, four-week intensive filmmaking workshop for teens aged 14-17.
Taught by award-wining Reel Works graduates, Summer Lab students work in teams to write, direct, shoot and edit short films, music videos and documentaries. Learn advanced digital video camera techniques and cut your movies using i-Movie editing. All classes are hands-on and fun. No filmmaking experience is required.
