Mission:
MISSION Using the urbanscape of buildings, tunnels, and bridges, the Salvadori Center introduces teachers and students to the wonder, beauty, and logic of architecture and engineering. We provide professional development for teachers and project-based learning experiences for students to master the mathematics, science, art, language, social studies, and technology embedded in our built environment.

GLOBE
Description: GLOBE (Guided Learning through Our Built Environment) is a nationally recognized 3-year partnership between the Center and selected New York City public elementary, middle and high schools that integrates the Salvadori pedagogy into the schools’ curricula through a comprehensive program of professional development for teachers and direct services to students. GLOBE both transforms students into self-activated learners with a sense of their place as global citizens and builds capacity among educators to "do Salvadori" in their classrooms. Schools are selected by application, available each January.

LEAD
Description: LEAD [Learning through Engineering, Architecture, and Design] provides an 8-week experience that includes a 2-hour professional development session, a 2-hour planning session, 8 classroom sessions, and curriculum chosen from the topics below. We require an extended class period (1 - 1½ hours is optimal) and will work with a maximum of 4 classes daily. For booking and further information, please contact thecenter@salvadori.org

Professional Development: Institutes
Description: In our Turbo Institutes for regular and out-of-school time educators, participants immerse themselves in the built environment of New York City through walking tours, visits to architectural and engineering firms and construction sites, as well as hands-on exploration of Salvadori lesson plans. Professional Development: Workshops
Description: All workshops are held at the Salvadori Center and cost $60 per person per workshop. Workshops can also be held at your organization and be adapted for use in out-of-school time settings. See the website for schedule and registration information.

Professional Development: PD-LEAD
Description: Under the guidance of Salvadori Senior Educators, teachers explore pedagogical practices ranging from the use of the built environment as a tool for math, science, humanities, and technology education to specific content curricula, like bridges, monuments and memorials, or green design. Prices are based on a maximum of 15 participants.

P-Credit Course with the NYC Dept of Education
Description: These courses explore the Salvadori methodology of using the built environment as a springboard for interdisciplinary learning. Both programs include practical ways of connecting core curricula to the spectacular architectural and structural features of New York City. Teachers will plan and implement lessons and activities that promote self-directed learning, interaction, choice, and civic engagement. Key concepts from the NYC Scope and Sequence, and the NYS and NYC Learning Standards will be addressed.

BRIDGES
Description: BRIDGES [Build, Research, Invent, Design, Grow and Explore through Science] is a five-year NSF-funded program to present after-school science education in community centers managed by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA).

Charrette
Description: Our design challenge, the "Annual Charrette," gathers students from all over the city for a day of intensive teamwork. A usual charrette will bring together 100 to 120 students from ten to a dozen schools and 30 to 40 volunteer architects and engineers to work as teams on a particular day-long design challenge.
