Resource Area For Teaching (RAFT)

Mission:

RAFT is a non-profit organization that believes hands-on teaching is the best way for teachers to teach and students to learn. We provide creative hands-on activities, educational resources, workshops and inexpensive materials, (many donated by local businesses), to enrich pre K-12 education and community group programs. Our goal is to assist teachers, non-profits and community groups, by providing materials and ideas for day-to-day teaching and for supporting professional growth.

For Teachers:

Description: As a teacher, you know why students respond well to hands-on teaching: it's fun, inspiring, and engaging. By definition, students are investigators. They explore with their hands and minds. Using hands-on materials, students build their conceptual understanding of how our world works. They learn to think creatively and to construct ideas through inquiry, investigation, and analysis.

Unfortunately, finding quality materials for hands-on teaching is a continual challenge for teachers. Perhaps even more challenging is the cost and planning involved. RAFT understands the vital need for an overall process of hands-on teaching and access to low-cost materials is just one part of the process. To empower teachers to teach hands-on math, science, and art, RAFT minimizes the cost and takes care of the planning.

For Community Groups:

Description: While access to quality materials is one part of the process, finding time to plan and prepare age-specific activities is also important. RAFT understands the fundamental need for and overall process of hands-on learning, both inside and outside the classroom. That's why we extend our services to community groups. Simply handling materials isn’t enough to motivate students—it’s what the experience with materials tells them about the world that incites them to learn, long after the activity ends. Developing students’ critical thinking skills so they can meet real-life challenges is as essential to community groups as to schools.
