Youth Empowerment Project

Description: YKASEC’s Youth Empowerment Project is a youth & community development initiative that gives Asian American high school students the opportunity to develop academic, life and leadership skills through its main components of education, and action. Our goal for the Youth Empowerment Project is to provide the educational, social, and leadership development support to youth build confidence by learning new skills and valuing themselves as talented individuals who can improve society.

The Project’s educational component, the Project provides youth participants with a comprehensive curriculum of rigorous study sessions and workshops, utilizing “popular education” methods and activities that promote interaction and creativity. Our study sessions allow youth to engage in indepth, critical learning and discussion, and also expose them to relevant issues that marginalized community members and immigrants face, such as housing issues, workers’ rights, and civic empowerment. YKASEC also provides youth with workshops and group activities that develop literacy levels, analytical abilities, creative-thinking capacities, and fundamental leadership skills such as such as goal setting, team-building, project planning and decision making.

Our action component engages the youth participants to use these newfound tools - the knowledge and skills developed in the education component - to develop their own projects to work for social change in our communities.
