READ’s Summer Reading Program
Description: READ’s Summer Reading Program takes place over a five-week period during July and August and includes instructional sessions every weekday. Instructional sessions are four hours long and include two forty-five minute one-on-one tutoring sessions as well as supplemental literacy related activities (i.e. small group reading related to a theme of the week, journal writing and art activities). Each child receives 100 hours of support including 37.5 hours of one-on-one tutoring. During READ’s Summer Reading Program, tutors are paid. Teens who have volunteered in the After School and In School Reading Programs and who have demonstrated exemplary commitment and professionalism are selected to fill these positions. READ summer programming takes place in two types of school settings: schools where approximately 25 students are served and in larger “Literacy Centers” where 60 to 90 students from the surrounding neighborhood are served
