Story Pirates
Mission:

Story Pirates has been committed to providing high quality arts education to children since 2003. Their Play/Write Program began as a pilot in a single low-income Harlem school and has grown to become a nationally respected creative writing and drama curriculum in place annually at over 100 schools across the country. Their assemblies and performances have been recognized and sponsored by partners such as Penguin Books, theaters like the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and on respected television programs such as The Daily Show on Comedy Central.  Story Pirates' curriculum focuses on core elements of national standards for Arts Education and English Language Arts, while providing rich cultural experiences that push the boundaries of traditional enrichment to tackle substantive educational goals like vocabulary development, story structure, revision, and confident self-expression. Over the past six year, Story Pirates has invited tens of thousands of students to see their own words and ideas come to life on stage, and watched as, one by one, these children began to call themselves writers.

Story Pirates

Description: Story Pirates is a well-established organization which has been operating in New York City since 2003. In that time, SVSP has reached tens of thousands of students in grades K-5 in all five New York City boroughs through school performances, in-class creative writing workshops, and after-school writing and performance programs. ; The need for attention and encouragement from adults is universal among children, and while it is prevalent in New York’s most under-resourced communities, it can also be found in the neighborhoods where it’s least expected. Story Pirates meets the needs of dozens of New York City’s elementary schools and serves a wide demographic population, from students in the most under-resourced schools to students in the most privileged. While some students need our help to see the value in learning to write a sentence, others need to be told that it’s okay to use the skills they’ve learned in school to be silly and make noise and communicate their ideas to their communities. Wherever we go, we find children eager to show us what they are capable of, and in need of recognition for the good work they’ve done. By focusing on the power of communication and self-expression, Story Pirates gives children the tools to become more confident students and encourages kids to become more thoughtful and passionate writers and speakers— in and out of school.
