Description: Independent School Early Prep Program

In understanding that the major obstacle confronting our boys on the path to independent boarding school admission the decline in overall student performance from 3rd to 8th grade, the BCNY established the Early Prep Program. While the primary goal of the independent school prep program will be academic and social preparation for placement into independent boarding/day schools and specialized schools (i.e. Stuyvesant, Bronx Science…) the emphasis of the program is put on prevention of declining test scores during the boys’ pivotal years. The program will prepare academically qualified students for admission into competitive independent middle and secondary boarding/day schools. Academic enrichment classes in reading, writing, and math will be offered. Moreover, the boys will benefit from sessions in test preparation, leadership training, cultural experiences, and sports.

Position Description:

Responsible for the curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation of the Independent School Early Prep Program (ISP PREP) with a particular emphasis on project based activities designed to help promote and foster the educational, intellectual, and emotional growth among all ISP PREP members through activities revolving around English Language Arts/Mathematics for middle school age children. This position will meet for 2 cycles commencing spring 2010 (April/May – 5 Saturdays 9:30am-2:30pm, July T/W/Th 9:30am-2:30pm)

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

1)Create curriculum, implement and supervise an age appropriate ELA/Math program for 2 groups of 13 boys with emphasis on enhancing test scores of academically qualified boys’ during their pivotal years (5th to 8th).

2)Work closely with the ELA/Math instructor and support staff to plan and implement a comprehensive program of development and activities for aforementioned age groups; engage directly in all activities and provide leadership through example and role modeling.

3)Maintain all necessary progress reports and records on an on-going basis.

4)Produce material for all requested reports, compiling a comprehensive review of specific data supported by a concrete analysis of members’ attendance, academic development and program performance using measured outcomes.

Compensation: $35/Hour

Additional qualifications: Certified ELA/Math teacher with 2+ years of experience.
