| Host: | NY State Health Foundation |
|
| Type: | Panel Discussion | |
A healthy and safe environment is a key factor to the successful education of our schoolchildren. But what happens when the school itself is toxic? With more than 1.1 million students in its public schools, New York City is faced with severe overcrowding in classrooms. To remedy this problem, the City launched an aggressive plan to build 56 new schools over the next five years. However, due to the scarcity of affordable land, many of these schools are being sited on property contaminated with toxins, in buildings formerly used for industrial purposes, and on sites close to sources of pollution. In addition, hundreds of pre-existing public schools were discovered to have light fixtures contaminated with PCBs, a toxin known to cause cancer. Please join us for a conversation with Christina Giorgio and Dawn Philip, attorneys with New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, as they discuss how regulations, public disclosure procedures, and insufficient oversight have created a public health issue that threatens the men, women, and children who occupy our public schools. When: Thursday, June 7, 201212 p.m.- 1:30 p.m. (Lunch will be provided) | ||
