Informing New York City's Middle School Initiative
Host:
The Research Alliance for New York City Schools
Type:
Panel Discussion
The Research Alliance for New York City Schools is hosting a colloquium on middle schools on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at New York University. The impetus for the colloquium is to help inform Chancellor Walcott's new middle school initiative, which he proposed in his policy address at NYU last fall. The colloquium will convene a diverse group of stakeholders, including researchers, funders, policymakers, practitioners and advocates to identify what we know, and what we need to know, about various aspects of improving middle schools. Panel sessions during the colloquium will focus on some of the key issues in middle grades education, including: How do you create an effective learning environment that fosters positive behaviors and academic routines in the middle grades? What are the contexts that support effective teaching in the middle grades? What does effective leadership in the middle grades look like? What are the challenges and opportunities in the middle grades curriculum? We hope you will join us at NYU's Kimmel Center for this timely and important conversation. Space for this event is limited.

Are you ever frustrated by the behavior of your students or your own children? Ever frustrated by your reaction to their behavior? Feel like you don’t want to yell but don’t know what else to do? Wish you could spend more time on content and less on classroom management? The Compassionate Classroom (and Living Room) workshop will give you tools and techniques to keep your students engaged through cooperation rather than control. You will learn to communicate in a way that shows compassion and respect for all children, and use powerful strategies to create an environment of mutual trust. Our goal is to provide all children with a sense of internal discipline, and offer teachers and parents alternatives to punishment methods that engage children rather then ostracize them. Avoid unnecessary conflict and power struggles with your students and you’ll be amazed at how much time you can dedicate to learning.Visit www.littlefloweryoga.com for more informationADVANCED REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED

Transforming Urban Education: New York City Schools under Chancellor Joel Klein: An Authors Dialogue
Host:
NYC Education Reform Retrospective
Type:
Conference
In 2003, under the leadership of Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Chancellor of Schools Joel Klein, New York City (NYC) implemented the Children First initiative—a sweeping wave of educational reform that has been one of the most complex and far-reaching urban reform efforts in the country. In 2009, several foundations came together to organize the New York City Education Reform Retrospective to document this reform effort and to identify lessons for consideration by local and national stakeholders. The Retrospective project brought together an exemplary group of researchers to review key reform areas associated with the initiative, including, among others, the DOE’s approach to managing and governing schools, reforming high school education, creating instructional change, and implementing new teacher and principal recruitment and retention policies. In this illustrated presentation, Dr. Jennifer O’Day will discuss the concept and approach to the New York and similar urban education reviews and highlight key findings of the retrospective. She will be joined by several other authors, including Sean Corcoran, Jeffrey Henig, James Kemple, Leslie Santee Siskin, and Leanna Stiefel. For more than two decades technology has been "on the verge" of transforming education, yet from pre-K through higher education, for the most part school has remained unchanged. Is it possible that the force that has continually improved nearly every other facet of modern life will ultimately have no fundamental impact on education? Or are we finally at the brink of real change? Can't make it? Sign up at http://generalassemb.ly to stay in the loop of future events and classes.
Join Tribeca Film Institute to watch THE REVISIONARIES, a documentary film chronicling a Texas Board of Education debate about the theory of evolution and a re-write of US History in text books used country wide. Using the film as a guide, teachers will examine their own experience in the classroom and design innovative ways to approach curriculum mapping, the drafting of lesson plans and engaging students and their community, while remaining in line with standards and testing expectations.
An Conversation on Education in Harlem with Borough President Scott Stringer
Host:
Type:
Panel Discussion
Appetizers, beverages and libations will be served.Since being elected in 2006, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, a product of the New York City public schools, has been a staunch advocate for the City’s students and parents. Committed to the belief that New York’s future depends on the strength of its schools, the Borough President has fought to save teacher jobs and to have new schools constructed. Toward this end, he has convened “War Room” meetings over the years with parents, Department of Education and other elected officials, to create new Manhattan schools including P.S. 151 and P.S. 452. In 2011, he established a task force with parents and other elected officials to reform Community and Citywide Education Councils, and to ensure that parents have more meaningful engagement opportunities in their children’s education and the school system at-large. He continuously draws attention to the City’s failure to address its growing student population, and has lead the fight to change the current, flawed system used to project the number of children entering our City's school system. To support his positions, Borough President Stringer has issued over forty policy reports designed addressing many of Manhattan’s most important challenges and issues, including: introducing comprehensive reform and empowerment measures to Manhattan’s Community Boards; leading the fight to maintain and create new affordable housing units and schools across the borough; and empowering parents. Prior to his election to Borough President, he served for thirteen years and six terms in the State Assembly, from 1992 until 2005. Borough President Stringer resides on Manhattan's Upper West Side with his wife, Elyse Buxbaum, and son, Maxwell.
