MUSEUM OF TOLERANCE NEW YORKINVITES YOU TO AN EDUCATOR OPEN HOUSE:Come to view our exhibits and learn about school and community programs available at the museum!Tuesday September 14th, 2010Anytime between 4:00pm-7:00pmThe Museum of Tolerance New York (MOTNY) is a unique multimedia facility located on East 42nd Street in the heart of Manhattan. An adjunct of the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, this training center focuses on the dynamics of racism and prejudice in America, international human rights, and the history of the Holocaust, through unique interactive educational exhibits. Visitors have an opportunity to experience the following exhibits: The Power of Words features a film that demonstrates how modern-day figures like Martin Luther King, Jr. used words to instill hope while others like Hitler, Stalin and other extremists used that same power to incite hatred. The Point of View Diner is a cyber-café that screens a variety of scenarios portraying escalating conflict in a contemporary American context. Group members have the opportunity to ‘interview’ the main characters and register personal opinions on the issues raised. The anonymous vote is instantly tabulated, providing a springboard for dialogue on violence prevention, conflict resolution and personal responsibility. The Millennium Machine offers a media presentation that focuses on pressing global human rights issues such as the exploitation of women and children and the plight of political refugees. Participants in this immersive theatre will test their knowledge of human rights via automated response technology and are challenged to discuss solutions together. The Hall of Memory is a multimedia theater that presents a thought provoking film, In Our Time, where the participants witness examples of genocide in the 20th & 21st centuries and reflect upon the lessons of history for today. There are two ways schools can participate in the educational opportunities at MOTNY:Ø Tools for Tolerance® for Teens Program. Trained facilitators utilize the unique MOTNY environment and customized classroom work to challenge students to assume greater personal responsibility in recognizing and challenging forms of discrimination. In addition, they encourage young people to think critically about the words and images in their own lives and how to use them to create positive change. This 5-hour program is for student groups of 35 - 40 students. The cost for a Tools for Tolerance® program is $100/participant* which includes lunch and materials. *Limited Subsidies AvailableØ Group Tours. School groups of 20-70 young people can participate in a dialogue and become inspired to learn from the past, engage in the present and assume responsibility for the future. These educational tours run for approximately 2 hours and are lead by a trained docent. The cost for a tour is $10/participant. Reservations are required and tour times are reserved on a first come first serve basis. Please note that the facility is appropriate for students 12 years old and up. The Introduction Seminar is a professional development service for teachers and administrators that provides background knowledge and information regarding American Indian Artists, Inc. (AMERINDA) as an organization and the Teaching Artists. The seminar is organized as follows:• Introduction to AMERINDA, the organization, as it represents the American Indian living culture and promotes indigenous perspectives through contemporary arts.• Historical account that ultimately reveals the reason for diversity of the modern American Indian artists and the varying circumstances contributing to their artistic perspectives.• Three AMERINDA teaching artists present their teaching construct in visual, literary, or performing arts, serving to familiarize seminar participants how the workshops engage the students and shape their enlightenment concerning cultural diversity.• Summary of the importance and significance in contracting one or more AMERINDA artists for a single workshop and/or workshop series as a means to expand the knowledge of today’s youth as they learn American Indian perspectives through contemporary art.The three-hour seminar, located at AMERINDA’s administrative office, with a $200.00 participant fee opens for enrollment for the following days during the 2010-2011 academic calendar year: September 18 or September 25, 2010; January 22 or February 5, 2011. All four sessions cover the same information, and reservations are essential to assure participation. The Institute for Urban Education hosts Daniel Willingham, a nationally known cognitive scientist who speaks to questions that educators have about their students’ ability to learn and examines the brain’s design as part of the answer.In this talk, Willingham will explore how cognitive research on choice-making can help us better keep students engaged in schoolwork, even after efforts to make learning experiences “interesting” and “relevant have failed.Students continually make choices: they choose whether to attend to a lesson or to a neighbor. What goes into such choices? Science has identified four important factors: the expected outcome, the judged probability that the outcome will be obtained, the cost of making the choice, and the chooser’s personality. The lecture will explore how to fruitfully apply this scientific learning to the classroom.Author of Why Don’t Students Like School?, Current Directions in Cognitive Science, and Cognition: The Thinking Animal, his work in education is based in cognitive psychology. He also writes a column called “Ask the Cognitive Psychologist” for American Educator.
