Co-Founder Evan Stone Speaks on "A Right Denied" Panel

Panel Discussion
der of Amistad Academy and Achievement First· Deborah Kenny, founder of Harlem Village Academies· Kevin Chavous, Chairman of the Black Alliance for Educational Options and DFER· Evan Stone, Founder of Educators 4 Excellence· Drema Brown, Director of Aspiring Principals and School Achievement, New Leaders for New SchoolsHere is the text on the back cover of the DVD:Most Americans have long known that our public schools aren’t getting the job done, but as our country increasingly falls behind our economic competitors and a wide academic gap within our country persists between low-income, minority students and their more affluent peers, these twin achievement gaps have reached crisis proportions. Simply put, the failure of our public schools is the most pressing domestic issue our nation faces. There’s good news, however: we now know what must be done to fix our schools and a wave of reform is beginning to sweep the country. But it won’t be easy – the system, while failing children, has been working very well for the adults, who fight ferociously to maintain the unacceptable status quo. The outcome of this battle will determine the long-term future of our country. Whitney Tilson committed himself to this issue more than 20 years ago, when he was one of the first people to join Wendy Kopp in starting Teach for America. She in turn later introduced him to David Levin, the co-founder of the KIPP network of charter schools, and he has served on KIPP’s board in New York City for nearly a decade. Mr. Tilson is also one of the founders of Democrats for Education Reform, Rewarding Achievement (REACH), and the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City, and serves on the board of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, the Council of Urban Professionals, and the Pershing Square Foundation. After spending more than two decades on the front lines, witnessing first-hand public education’s shocking failures and remarkable successes, Mr. Tilson was inspired to assemble a powerful and at times unsettling presentation about the twin achievement gaps and what must be done to address them. He utilizes the latest data and research to paint the most detailed portrait of American public education ever committed to film. More importantly, he presents us with a way forward so our nation can deliver on its promise to all of its children and ensure its long-term future.

Advanced Screening of The Rubber RoomFriday, April 166-7:30pm, followed by a 30-minute Q&A with the filmmakersJoin NYU Wagner's Education Policy Studies Association (WEPSA) for the Advanced Screening of The Rubber Room, an independent, in-depth documentary that brings to light a controversial topic in NYC public education. Every day, hundreds of suspended teachers report to “Rubber Rooms” around the city rather than their schools. A slang term, "Rubber Rooms" are holding facilities for teachers charged of misconduct. Temporarily and indefinitely revoked of their teaching privileges, the accused educators are paid in full each day for months and sometimes years as they wait for their adjudications.Annually, the NYC Department of Education spends an estimated $35-65 million to sustain these Rubber Rooms. This event is open to the public. Workshop
Pre-teens and just-teens are moving seriously into abstract thinking and can project possible outcomes with ease. When armed with the knowledge of how to proceed, they are ready to take on some adult tasks. This workshop works with the publication Shaping Up Your Financial Future, a set of 16 lessons on the economics way of thinking, importance of an education, money management, saving, investing, and credit. These middle school lessons give students the information and the confidence to set goals and research options. The lessons also involve students with the larger community, a transition from school world to real world that sixth to eighth graders welcome. Students also learn that many personal finance decisions require them to use their mathematics skills.

Elementary school students are curious about their world and how it works. They are good at classifying information, solving problems and finding the logic in a situation. This workshop uses two publications, Pocket Power (grades K-2) and Steps to Financial Fitness (grades 3-5) which help accommodate this intellectual curiosity without sacrificing any of the more playful aspects of learning. The active learning lessons use engaging strategies that enable students to develop the skills and understanding needed for sound financial decision-making. They also provide the stepping-stones to the more complicated world of personal finance they will later encounter.
