Reversing the Widget Effect:Opportunities for Teacher Effectiveness Reform with Recovery Act FundingWe hope you’ll join us next Wednesday, July 8, for a discussion of teacher effectiveness reform. As Secretary Duncan noted in today’s speech to the NEA, now is the time for action: “These policies were created over the past century to protect the rights of teachers but they have produced an industrial factory model of education that treats all teachers like interchangeable widgets. A recent report from the New Teacher Project found that almost all teachers are rated the same. Who in their right mind really believes that? We need to work together to change this.”The New Teacher Project (TNTP) will present The Widget Effect – TNTP’s wide-ranging new study on the nation’s indifference to teacher effectiveness – and facilitate a panel discussion on how school systems, states and teachers unions can respond with Race to the Top and other ARRA funding. The event is hosted by the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the Robertson Foundation.WHAT: Presentation of The Widget Effect’s findings Daniel Weisberg, Vice President of Policy & General Counsel, The New Teacher Project Panel discussion on reversing the Widget EffectTim Daly, President, The New Teacher Project Rob Weil, Deputy Director of Educational Issues, American Federation of Teachers Joanne Weiss, Director of Race to the Top, U.S. Department of Education Moderator: Michele Cahill, Vice President, Carnegie Corporation of New York
