Class Sizes Jump in NYC

Posted by annamarkowitz

February 18, 2009, 10:02 am

Class sizes jumped last year despite the reduction of 4,000 students attending NYC public schools (down to 1,019,525).

This jump in class size is mostly due to the principals being weary of hiring new teachers in the current economic climate. But critics of Bloomberg and Joel Klein think that they should have been paying more attention to the initiative to reduce class sizes. With more attention the class sizes could have decreased instead of increasing.

Stimulus could spare the 15,000 teacher layoffs

Posted by annamarkowitz

February 12, 2009, 11:07 am

Mayor Bloomberg went to Washington this past week to warn about the repercussions of not getting enough money for education.

It looks like his arguments worked because he got 90% of what he was asking for. It is not certain how he will use this money, but he is going to try his hardest not to cut teacher positions. The updated budgets are due in June, so he might keep a bit mum until then.

He received $1 billion for education stabilization and $750 million for building and fixing schools.

Republicans strongly criticized some of the proposals as wasteful spending and an ill-considered expansion of the federal government’s role, traditionally centered on aid to needy students, into new realms like local school construction.

NYC Teacher Layoffs

Posted by annamarkowitz

February 05, 2009, 12:22 pm

Mayor Bloomberg said that there might be layoffs of 15,000 NYC teachers. The union says that this isn't necessarily harmful, but that we need to make sure that we keep our best teachers in the system.

Unlike the private sector where they layoff the poorest performing employees,  the city is valuing seniority over performance. This could mean that many talented teachers lose their jobs, while older poorer performing teachers stay in the system.

Mayoral Control of NYC Schools

Posted by Rachel

January 31, 2009, 5:24 am

There is perhaps nothing more controversial in the New York City education world than mayoral control over the city's public school system. The issue has been in the spotlight recently because the NY State Assembly is holding a series of 5 public hearings on mayoral control, one in each borough. The first, held at Queens Borough Hall, happened last Thursday, January 29th. Apparently the hearing lasted almost 8 hours!!
