LinkEducation Expo Workshops!

Just one month left untill our 7th Annual K-12 Education Expo and we sure do have some good things lined up!

 

We have workshops for Parents, Teachers, and activities to keep the kids happy while you are here!

 

Some of our favorite workshops from last year are returning, like Managing Difficult Behavior and Build a Carnivorous Bog.

Early Puberty Affecting our Classrooms?

This weekend the New York Times published an article in their magazine stating that the average age of puberty for white girls is 9.96 (almost 10 years old) and for black girls is even younger: 8.87 (less than 9 years old!). I wish that I could say that I was shocked by these figures, but as a former 3rd grade teachers in a predominantly black community I had noticed the same thing happening in my classroom.

As someone who has worked in the education field for the past seven (7) years and taught in East New York (Brooklyn), I am all too familiar with the socioeconomic and ethnic gaps that persists in our country. I have heard statistic after statistic about how black and Latino youth have lower graduation rates: black youth in New York City have a graduation rate of 60%, Latino youth 58%, and white youth reaching 78%.

TED-Ed: A Great Resource for Educational Videos

TED, the organization focused on spreading ideas via short lectures on diverse topics in technology, education, and design, unveiled its first TED-Ed Youtube channel videos this week. When you visit, you’ll find an amazing source of free, online videos featuring animated high school / college lesson plans -- perfect for a refresher or for whetting your intellectual appetite!

Have an itch to learn something new -- or have a son / daughter who needs some self-directed learning material? The Faculty Project is designed to help you do both!

An organization dedicated to bringing college-level course content to an internet-connected device near you, The Faculty Project currently offers an array of 12 different course topics in which anyone is free to enroll. Each enrolled student will also have access to the professor and other students via an online discussion board.

Scholastic Parent and Child magazine released its top 100 children’s books today, including many contemporary titles (The Hunger Games) as well as beloved children’s classics (Charlotte’s Web). USAToday dives into the list, uncovering all 100 titles -- as well as “superlative award” winners such as “best read aloud” and “most side-splitting hilarious”. Check out the full list here.

US Secretary of Education Hosts Twitter Town Hall

Engineering Design Challenge

Iridescent Learning is hosting a workshop at our 6th Annual Education Expo!

 

At this workshop, Iridescent Learning engineer students will come up with an engineering challenge for kids, and the attendees of the workshop will have 45 minutes to complete this challenge. Iridescent Learning will use their hands on technique to engage the kids in science and engineering learning. Fun for the whole family!
