NYC Teacher Layoffs

Mayor Bloomberg said that there might be layoffs of 15,000 NYC teachers. The union says that this isn't necessarily harmful, but that we need to make sure that we keep our best teachers in the system.

Unlike the private sector where they layoff the poorest performing employees,  the city is valuing seniority over performance. This could mean that many talented teachers lose their jobs, while older poorer performing teachers stay in the system.

Democrats For Education Reform just released its suggestions for how to make the new stimulus plan work for the education sector. Joe Williams, Executive Director stated that, "This economic stimulus package is a historic investment in education, the largest increase in federal funds in history and presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get things right. Mayoral Control of NYC Schools

There is perhaps nothing more controversial in the New York City education world than mayoral control over the city's public school system. The issue has been in the spotlight recently because the NY State Assembly is holding a series of 5 public hearings on mayoral control, one in each borough. The first, held at Queens Borough Hall, happened last Thursday, January 29th. Apparently the hearing lasted almost 8 hours!!

BELL, founded in 1992 as a tutoring and mentoring program at one school in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is now serving over 12,600 students in their after school and summer programs and has received many awards for exemplary service.

In this turbulent economic time, financial literacy is a topic that seems to be on a lot of teacher’s minds. So, this month we want to share some great tips from Elissa Kline, Co-Executive Director, Cents Ability. Cents Ability is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower New York City high school students to achieve their goals through prudent and informed management of their financial resources.  The nonprofit started in 2004 and has worked hard with a number of schools to develop a strong financial literacy curriculum which they are going to share here.
