In case you haven't already heard, George Soros made a pretty significant donation to put $200 in the pockets of New York City children who's families are on welfare. The point is to help the students pay for school expenses - uniforms, books, pencils, etc. - with no strings attached. The money for the eligible children goes straight into the food stamp accounts. That money is a great start given the increase of expenses to families because of school budget cuts.
Why is he doing this? According to the NY Times, Soros says that when he was studying at the London School of Economics, he worked nights as a waiter. His tutor found out and sent a letter to the Quakers, which had a history of charity: “They just sent me 40 pounds without any strings attached. I thought that was the way to do it, without strings attached.”
