Managing Difficult Behavior- Tip 2

Here is another great tip from Ramapo on Managing Difficult Behavior. Learn more about this tip and other information at their two workshops at our 6th Annual K-12 Education Expo!

Too often, adults are more likely to react when a child misbehaves than when he or she behaves. In fact, in homes and schools, the quickest way for a child to get attention is often to act out. In order to change this dynamic, it is crucial to reinforce positive behavior purposefully. Show children you are paying attention to them by offering honest, specific praise. Point out the behaviors and attitudes that reinforce effective habits. Remember that a child’s special interests can be her strengths. Use the child’s interests to help her attend to the task at hand, increase social contact, and build life skills. Catch kids being good!

This strategy comes from Ramapo for Children’s curriculum for educators, youth workers, and parents, which provides practical tools for managing difficult behaviors and fostering environments that support success for all children. Ramapo Training shares our curriculum with the community through targeted workshops and coaching sessions. For more information, please visit our website at www.ramapotraining.org.
